Intermediate Backend Developer (Ruby on Rails)
Some engineers are happiest building the new thing. This role is for the one who wants to know why the old thing broke.
Howler builds the technology behind live experience — ticketing, access control and cashless payments in one system, trusted across more than 20 countries and used by some of South Africa's biggest events: Ultra South Africa, Comic Con Africa, Black Coffee Weekender, MTN Bushfire. Much of it runs RFID hardware that has to keep working when the network does not.
We are hiring an Intermediate Backend Developer for the support-and-maintenance side of that platform. Be clear on what that means before you apply: a real share of this job is investigating and fixing what has gone wrong — bugs, client-reported faults, the thing that worked last weekend and does not this one — alongside building and maintaining the Rails applications underneath. If you want a seat that is only new features, we are advertising one of those too, and you should apply to that instead.
Done well, this is one of the most valuable seats in the company. The person who can read an unfamiliar Rails codebase, reproduce a fault nobody else can, and ship the fix with a test around it is the person everyone comes to.
Casual Work

Every one of them needs Wolves onsite: on the gates scanning tickets, helping vendors with cashless, and making sure a crowd gets in, gets served and has a good night.

The premium event app is how organisers reach their audience before, during and after event day, and it's growing fast.
We're hiring an App Success Manager to own it end to end. Howler's app strategy sets the destination; you own the route and the vehicle — and you'll help shape the route based on what you see working, event to event.
Performance Marketing Specialist

Behind those events sits a marketing machine our organisers run on too: Pulse, campaigns, CRM, the app. The machine is built. We're hiring the person who makes it pay.
We're hiring a Performance Marketing Specialist to own performance marketing end to end — Howler's growth and our clients'. The business sets the destination; you own the spend, the channels and the campaigns that get there — and what you learn on the way redraws the map for everyone.
System Support Specialist
When a payment fails at 21:00 on a Saturday, you are the person who finds out why.

Money moves through our platform while the crowd is in the venue. When something breaks, it is rarely theoretical: a settlement file that did not arrive, a gateway that stopped authorising, a report that shows a blank where a number should be.
We are hiring a System Support Specialist to hold that line. You are the first person on the problem — triaging it, reproducing it, fixing what you can, and handing engineering something they can act on when you cannot.
Tech Lead
Half your week is code. The other half is the eight people writing it.

Real money moves through it while a crowd is inside a venue, and a good deal of the hardware has to keep working when the network does not.
We are hiring a Tech Lead — a hands-on technical leader for an eight-person engineering team that is about to become eleven. This is not an architecture-astronaut seat and it is not a people-management seat dressed up in technical language. The split is roughly half and half, and we will hold it to that.
Senior Ruby on Rails Developer
Your code clears the gate at Ultra while sixty thousand people are standing in front of it.

We are hiring a Senior Ruby on Rails Developer to take ownership of significant areas of that platform — leading the technical implementation of complex product work, shaping the architecture underneath it, and raising the engineering bar for everyone around you.

We are hiring an Intermediate Ruby on Rails Developer to build new product. You will work with Product and Design on features that customers actually touch — prototyping, shipping, iterating — on a platform that handles millions of transactions a year.
To be plain about what this role is not: it is not legacy maintenance and it is not the support queue. (We are hiring separately for a support-weighted backend seat, and that ad says so.)
Flutter Developer (Intermediate to Senior)
The app has to work in a field, on one bar of signal, with sixty thousand people around it.

We are hiring a Flutter developer, intermediate or senior, to build and improve that app. You will turn ideas into working software quickly and stay accountable for your changes from implementation through release — not through to "pull request opened".
Be clear on one thing before you apply: we are looking for software engineering accelerated by AI, not a replacement for engineering fundamentals. Both halves of that sentence are load-bearing.
